NUTRITION SMART VILLAGE PROGRAMME

Focus: GS II- Governance

Why in News?

A programme on “Nutrition Smart Village” will be initiated to strengthen the Poshan Abhiyan.

  • It will be part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, to commemorate the 75th year of Independence of India.

About Nutrition Smart Village:

  • The initiative is in line with the Prime Minister’s call to adopt and transform 75 villages.
  • A total of 75 villages will be adopted by All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) centres and Indian Council of Agricultural Research -Central Institute for Women in Agriculture (ICAR-CIWA).
Objective:
  • To promote nutritional awareness, education and behavioural change in rural areas involving farm women and school children.
  • Harnessing traditional knowledge through the local recipe to overcome malnutrition.
  • Implementing nutrition-sensitive agriculture through homestead agriculture and Nutri-garden.

About Poshan Abhiyaan

Nodal: Ministry of women and Child development

  • The term ‘POSHAN’ in the name of the programme stands for ‘Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition’.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan launched in 2018 aims at improving the nutritional status of Children from 0-6 years, Adolescent Girls, Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers.
  • According to ‘Mission 25 by 2020’, the National Nutrition Mission aims to achieve a reduction in stunting from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan focuses on convergence among partner Ministries leveraging technology and Jan Andolan among other things, to address issue of malnutrition comprehensively.
  • Near-real time reporting by field functionaries and improved MIS is aimed at smooth implementation of scheme and better service delivery.
  • The Abhiyan targets to reduce Stunting, undernutrition, Anemia (among young children, women and adolescent girls) and reduce low birth weight by 2%, 2%, 3% and 2% per annum respectively.
  • It will monitor and review implementation of all such schemes and utilize existing structural arrangements of line ministries wherever available.
  • Its large component involves gradual scaling-up of interventions supported by on-going World Bank assisted Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Systems Strengthening and Nutrition Improvement Project (ISSNIP) to all districts in the country by 2022.
  • Its vision is to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India by 2022.
  • Implementation of POSHAN Abhiyaan is based on the four-point strategy/pillars of the mission:
    • Inter-sectoral convergence for better service delivery
    • Use of technology (ICT) for real time growth monitoring and tracking of women and children
    • Intensified health
    • Nutrition services for the first 1000 days
Poshan 2.0:

Recently, the Ministry for Women and Child Development inaugurated Poshan 2.0 and urged all Aspirational Districts to establish a Poshan Vatika (nutrition garden) during the Nutrition Month (Poshan Mah) (from 1st September, 2021).

Why in News?

PM pays tributes to Maulana Azad and Acharya Kripalani on their Jayanti.

About Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

  • The National Education Day of India is celebrated every year on 11 November to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India.
  • Born on 11 November 1888 and died on 22 February 1958.
  • He was senior Muslim leader of Indian National Congress during Indian independence movement.
  • He is commonly remembered as Maulana Azad (word Maulana is honorific meaning ‘Our Master’) and he had adopted Azad (Free) as his pen name.
  • In 1923, at age of 35, he became youngest person to serve as President of Indian National Congress.
  • He served as Congress president from 1940 to 1945, during which Quit India rebellion was launched.
  • He also worked for Hindu-Muslim unity through the Al-Hilal newspaper.

About Acharya Kripalani

  • The Jivatram Bhagwant’s Kripalani, also called Acharya Kripalani, (born November 11, 1888, Hyderabad, India [now in Pakistan]died March 19, 1982, Ahmadabad), prominent Indian educator, social activist, and politician in both pre- and post-independence India,
  • The Kripalani Ji who was a close associate of Mohandas K Gandhi and a longtime supporter of his ideology.
  • The Acharya kripalani ji wife was famous the Sucheta Kripalani, the India’s 1st women Chief Minister.
  • He was a leading figure in the Indian National Congress (Congress Party) during the 1930s and 40s and later was a founder of the Praja Socialist Party (PSP).
  • He grew close to Gandhi ji  and at one point, he was one of Gandhi’s most ardent disciples.
  • He had served as the General Secretary of the INC for almost a decade. 
  • He had experience working in the field of education and was made the president to rebuild the INC. 
  • The disputes between the party and the Government over procedural matters affected his relationship with the colleagues in the Government. 
  • The Kripalani was a familiar figure to generations of dissenters, from the Non cooperation movements of the 1920s to the Emergency of the 1970s.

ONAKE OBAVVA

Focus: GS I- History

Why in News?

The Prime Minister bowed to the great Kannada warrior woman, Onake Obavva on the special occasion of her Jayanti. Shri Modi said that Onake Obavva ‘inspires us as a symbol of our Nari Shakti.’

About Onake Obavva:

  • Onake Obavva was a woman warrior who fought the forces of Hyder Ali single-handedly with a pestle (‘onake’ in Kannada) in Chitradurga in the 18th century.
  • Hyder Ali, a ruler of the Mysore Kingdom and father of Tipu Sultan invaded the Chitradurga Fort, which was ruled by Madakari Nayaka in the 18th century.
  • Chitradurga Fort, locally known as Elusuttina Kote, (the fort of seven circles in Kannada), is situated in Chitradurga, 200 km northwest of Bengaluru.
  • Onake Obavva was the wife of soldier Kahale Mudda Hanuma, who was the guard of the fort.
  • Inspired by Onake Obavva, in 2018, the Chitradurga police started ‘Obavva Pade’, a squad of women police constables to protect and educate women in the district.
