GURU RAVIDAS 

Focus: Prelims, GS I-Indian History

Why in news?

The President of India has greeted fellow citizens on the birthday of Guru Ravidas.

About Guru Ravidas:

  • Guru Ravidas was a 14th century saint and reformer of the Bhakti movement in North India.
  • He gained prominence due to his belief in one God and his unbiased religious poems.
  • He was born in Varanasi in a cobbler’s family.
  • His devotional songs were included in ‘Guru Granth Sahib’, the religious text of the Sikhs.
  • He was against caste system and openly despised the notion of a Brahminical society.

Bhakti Movement

  • Bhakti movement took place in Tamil Nadu between the seventh and ninth centuries.
  • Bhakti saints looked upon religion as love between the worshipped and worshipper.
  • Bhakti was reflected in the emotional poems of the Nayanars (devotees of Shiva) and Alvars (devotees of Vishnu).
  • A more effective method for spreading the Bhakti ideology was the use of local languages. The Bhakti saints composed their verses in local languages.
  • They also translated Sanskrit works to make them understandable to a wider audience.
  • Examples include Kabir, Surdas , Tulsidas, Shankaradeva, Chaitanya Mirabai.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FOR COAL SECTOR

Focus: GS III-Industry and Infrastructure

Why in news?

Ministry of Coal has moved forward with a comprehensive Sustainable Development Plan for sustainable development of coal sector.

Key points:

  • Utlization of Mine Water: Top priority is being given to gainful utilization of Mine Water for irrigation &providing treated water for drinking to rural population.
  • Eco Parks: 10 new Eco-Parks in different mining areas are under different stages of development.
  • Extraction and use of Sand from Over Burden (OB): promoting sustainable development through gainful utilization of wastes generated during mining.
  • First Mile Connectivity:  coal is being transported through conveyor belt from Coal Handling Plants to Silo for loading. This process eliminates movement of coal through road and thus minimizes the environmental pollution.
  • Renewable Energy: Towards use of renewable energy, CIL has set a target to establish 3 GW of Solar PV projects by FY24 to become self-reliant in electricity.

E-DAAKHIL PORTAL

Focus: GS II-Polity and Governance

Why in news?

E-Daakhil portal for Consumer grievance redressal is now operational in 15 States/UTs. Department of Consumer Affairs is now proactively following up with the states to launch e-filing portal at their ends.

About E-Daakhil portal:

  • It is launched by National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.
  • The e-daakhil portal empowers the consumer and their advocates to file consumer complaints online.
  • It also facilitates to male payment of requisite fees online from anywhere in order to redress their complaints.
  • The site of the e-Daakhil Portal was developed and is maintained by the National Information Centre (NIC) under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.
  • This portal has been developed under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

National consumer dispute redressal commission:

Nodal Ministry: Ministry of consumer affairs and public distribution

The Consumer Protection Act was passed in 1986 to protect the interests of the consumers.( quasi- judicial body)

The objective of this law is to provide a simple, fast and inexpensive mechanism to the citizens to redress their grievances in specified cases.

The Act envisages a three-tier quasi-judicial machinery at the National, State and District levels:

i. National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission  known as “National Commission”;

ii. State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission known as “State Commission”;

iii. District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum – known as “District Forum”.

Why in news?

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs virtually inaugurated the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) Regional Office (South) in Chennai.

About competition commission of India:

Nodal: Ministry of corporate affairs

Competition Commission of India (CCI) is a statutory body of the Government of India responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002.

Competition Commission of India aims to establish a robust competitive environment.

  • Through proactive engagement with all stakeholders, including consumers, industry, government and international jurisdictions.
  • By being a knowledge intensive organization with high competence level.
  • Through professionalism, transparency, resolve and wisdom in enforcement.

Composition of CCI

  • The Commission consists of one Chairperson and six Members.
  • The commission is a quasi-judicial body .
  • Eligibility of members: The Chairperson and every other Member shall be a person of ability, integrity and standing and who, has been, or is qualified to be a judge of a High Court, or, has special knowledge of, and professional experience of not less than fifteen years in international trade, economics, business, commerce, law, finance, accountancy, management, industry, public affairs, administration or in any other matter which, in the opinion of the Central Government, may be useful to the Commission.

Why in news?

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs participated virtually in the First G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting under the Italian Presidency

About G20:

  • The G20 is an informal group of 19 countries and the European Union, with representatives of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
  • The G20 membership comprises a mix of the world’s largest advanced and emerging economies, representing about two-thirds of the world’s population, 85% of global gross domestic product, 80% of global investment and over 75% of global trade.
  • The members of the G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

SARAS AAJEEVIKA MELA 2021

Focus: Prelims, GS I-Indian History

Why in news?

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Food Processing inaugurated Saras Aajeevika Mela 2021 at Noida Haat.

About  Saras Aajeevika Mela:

  • It is an initiative by the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD).
  • It is organised by the marketing arm of the Ministry, Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART).
  • Its objective is to bring the rural women SHGs formed with support of DAY-NRLM, under one platform to show-case their skills, sell their products and help them build linkages with bulk buyers.
  • The Mela acts as an integrated approach towards women empowerment.
