Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of machines to simulate human intelligence by learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making using algorithms and data. Recognizing its strategic importance, India launched the IndiaAI Mission (2024) with an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore to promote AI innovation, infrastructure, and adoption across sectors, including national security.

Applications of AI in Strengthening India’s Internal Security

Intelligence Gathering and Threat Detection: AI analyses large volumes of data to identify suspicious activities and predict security threats.
Example: AI-powered facial recognition and predictive analytics assist intelligence agencies in identifying terror suspects.

Border Surveillance: AI-enabled drones, smart sensors, and satellite imagery enhance real-time monitoring of difficult terrains.
Example: AI-based surveillance systems are increasingly deployed along India’s international borders for infiltration detection.

Cyber Security: AI detects malware, phishing attacks, ransomware, and network anomalies in real time.
Example: CERT-In uses AI-assisted tools for threat intelligence and cyber incident response.

Counter-Terrorism and Crime Investigation: AI facilitates facial recognition, biometric identification, and analysis of digital evidence.
Example: The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) and National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) improve criminal identification and investigation.

Disaster and Emergency Response: AI supports early warning systems, resource deployment, and disaster impact assessment.
Example: AI integrated with ISRO satellite data enhances flood forecasting and disaster management.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence is emerging as a force multiplier for India’s internal security by enhancing surveillance, intelligence, cyber defence, and emergency response. Ensuring ethical AI, data privacy, robust cybersecurity, and indigenous innovation under the IndiaAI Mission will be essential to harness its full potential while safeguarding democratic values and national security.
