What is UGC-NET?
The UGC-NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test) is a national-level examination that determines a candidate’s eligibility for two important roles:
- Assistant Professor in colleges and universities across India.
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for those who wish to pursue advanced research in their chosen field.
Clearing the UGC-NET is a crucial step for anyone aspiring to build a career in academics or research. Successful candidates can secure teaching positions in higher education institutions or receive funding support to carry out meaningful research work.
Who Conducts the UGC-NET Exam?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is the organization responsible for conducting the UGC-NET exam.
- From December 2018 to June 2024, the exam was held in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.
- It was later shifted to offline mode (OMR sheet based) for a brief period.
- However, due to issues like paper leaks, the authorities reverted to online CBT mode to ensure transparency and fairness.
As of now, the UGC-NET is conducted entirely online, making the process smooth, efficient, and secure for aspirants.
UGC-NET Exam Structure
The UGC-NET consists of two papers:
- Paper I – Focuses on general aptitude, teaching and research skills, reasoning, and comprehension.
- Paper II – Subject-specific questions based on the candidate’s chosen specialization.
Both papers are equally important, and a strategic preparation plan is essential to clear the exam with a good score.

Our programs include:

UGC-NET Exam Pattern
The UGC-NET exam consists of two papers – Paper I and Paper II. These papers are conducted in a single session with no breaks in between.
- Paper I, also known as Teaching & Research Aptitude, evaluates a candidate’s general skills such as teaching aptitude, reasoning ability, communication skills, mathematical and analytical reasoning, and current affairs.
- Paper II is subject-specific, focusing on the candidate’s chosen post-graduation discipline, such as Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, or History.
Both papers are crucial, as they collectively determine a candidate’s eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or Assistant Professor role in Indian universities and colleges.

Difference Between JRF and Assistant Professor Eligibility
The UGC-NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test) is a prestigious examination conducted by NTA to determine a candidate’s eligibility for two key academic roles:
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
- Assistant Professor
While the exam is common, the outcome depends on your performance, specifically your final score and the cut-off marks.
At Legacy IAS Academy, we ensure that aspirants understand these distinctions clearly, as it directly impacts their career path in academics and research
.
1. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
The JRF is designed for candidates who aim to pursue advanced research in their chosen subject.
- Purpose:
Provides financial assistance to candidates undertaking M.Phil. or Ph.D. programs in universities or recognized research institutions. - Benefits:
- Monthly fellowship stipend from UGC.
- Opportunity to engage in full-time research.
- Eligibility to apply for Assistant Professor positions later, if desired.
- Eligibility:
- Candidates must score above the JRF cut-off, which is higher than the Assistant Professor cut-off for the same subject and category.
- Career Path:
Research-focused career, leading to opportunities in academia, think tanks, policy-making bodies, and higher-level teaching roles.
2. Assistant Professor Eligibility
This category is for candidates aspiring to teach at colleges and universities without receiving the research fellowship.
- Purpose:
To qualify for lecturer or assistant professor positions in higher education institutions. - Benefits:
- Eligibility to apply for faculty positions in colleges, universities, and educational institutions across India.
- Focus on teaching and mentoring students.
- Eligibility:
- Candidates must score above the cut-off for Assistant Professor, which is lower than the JRF cut-off.
- Career Path:
Teaching-focused career, with possibilities for research involvement later.
Key Difference – Cut-off Marks
The cut-off for JRF is always higher than that for Assistant Professor for the same subject and category.
This means:
- If you cross the JRF cut-off, you automatically qualify for both JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility.
- If you only meet the Assistant Professor cut-off, you qualify to teach, but you do not receive the JRF fellowship.
Summary Table
Aspect | Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) | Assistant Professor Eligibility |
Purpose | Funding for advanced research (M.Phil./Ph.D.) | Teaching in colleges and universities |
Financial Support | Monthly fellowship stipend | No financial stipend provided |
Cut-off Marks | Higher cut-off required | Lower cut-off required |
Career Focus | Research, publications, academia | Teaching and academic mentoring |
Automatic Qualification | Qualifies for both JRF & Assistant Professor | Qualifies only for Assistant Professor |
Legacy IAS Advantage
At Legacy IAS Academy, we prepare students for both JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility by providing:
- Expert faculty guidance for conceptual clarity.
- Updated study material aligned with NTA guidelines.
- Comprehensive mock tests and previous year question discussions.
- Personalized mentorship to help you reach the higher JRF cut-off.
Our structured preparation strategy ensures that you are well-equipped to achieve your career goals, whether in teaching, research, or both.
UGC-NET Marking Scheme
Understanding the marking scheme of the UGC-NET exam is essential for effective preparation and test-taking strategy. Below is the official marking system, applicable to both Paper I and Paper II.
How Questions Are Evaluated
- Each question will have four answer options, and the candidate must select one correct option.
- Both Paper I and Paper II follow the same marking criteria.
Marks for Each Question
- Correct Answer:
- Each question carries 2 marks.
- For every correct response, 2 marks will be awarded to the candidate.
- Incorrect Answer:
- There is no negative marking in the UGC-NET exam.
- This means no marks will be deducted for wrong answers.
- Unanswered / Unattempted Questions:
- No marks will be awarded or deducted if a question is left blank.
Special Cases: Incorrect or Dropped Questions
In rare cases, if a question is:
- Found to be incorrect,
- Has multiple correct answers, or
- Dropped due to human or technical error,
Only those candidates who attempted that question will be awarded full marks for it.
Summary Table
Response Type | Marks Awarded |
Correct Answer | +2 marks |
Incorrect Answer | 0 (No negative marking) |
Unanswered / Unattempted | 0 |
Dropped / Ambiguous Question (attempted) | +2 marks |
Legacy IAS Tip for Students
Since there is no negative marking, candidates are encouraged to attempt all questions:
- Even if unsure, make an educated guess.
- Attempting every question increases your chances of scoring higher.
- Use the process of elimination to narrow down to the most probable answer.
Why Understanding the Marking Scheme Matters
- Helps you strategize your attempts during the exam.
- Guides you to maximize your score by attempting every question.
- Reduces stress by clarifying that no penalties exist for wrong answers.
At Legacy IAS Academy, we train students with mock tests and practice sessions that replicate the actual UGC-NET exam environment, ensuring you are confident and exam-ready.
