◈ Background & Context

The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) is the world's second most endangered lion subspecies. Once ranging from Greece to India, the species was hunted to near-extinction by the early 20th century.

Today, the entire free-ranging population survives only in and around Gir National Park and Sanctuary in Gujarat — the only place on Earth where this subspecies exists in the wild.

Neutrinos as Nuclear Watchdogs — Double Chooz Team Detects Spent Fuel Signature for First Time

  • Future compact detectors: A 2019 study in Nature Communications theorised that portable, compact neutrino detectors could one day identify small undeclared facilities. Building such machines remains a significant engineering challenge.
