UPI and the MDR Question — Taxation & Other Laws (Amendment) Bill 2026 Reverses a Decade of Policy

Google's Nano Banana AI image-generation feature on Google Earth — which allowed users to generate any visual content overlaid on satellite imagery of any location — was pulled within approximately 24 hours of its July 30 launch, after users bypassed enterprise-level safeguards to create deepfake satellite images depicting terrorist attacks, industrial accidents, and other harmful scenarios.
A satellite image deepfake is an AI-generated image layered over or replacing authentic satellite imagery to show something that doesn't exist — damaged infrastructure, troop movements, environmental disasters, or altered terrain.
Unlike video deepfakes (which audiences often view with scepticism), satellite imagery carries an inherent authority — people assume satellite data is objectively real.
- Real-world precedent: During the Iran-Israel war (February–March 2026), the Tehran Times X account shared an AI-generated satellite image purporting to show the aftermath of a US military strike — created using older satellite imagery of the site. Researchers identified it as fake, but it circulated widely.
