India's Coconut Sector: From Kalpavriksha to a ₹7,038 Crore Export Economy

India — the world's largest coconut producer — has seen its coconut export earnings surge 62% in a single year to ₹7,038 crore in 2025-26, even as the government launches a new Coconut Promotion Scheme to address structural challenges of aging plantations, pest outbreaks and low value-addition at the farm level.

Coconut cultivation in India spans nearly three millennia and sustains approximately 30 million people, including 10 million farmers — predominantly small and marginal holders in the coastal states.

Revered in Hindu tradition as the Kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree), the palm also generates a complex industrial ecosystem ranging from edible oil to activated carbon to coir fibre.

Despite its cultural and livelihood significance, the sector faces structural stress: aging plantations (many over 60 years old), the spread of root wilt disease (especially in Kerala), and a historically low-value export basket dominated by coconut shell charcoal and copra oil.

India's Proposed Strategic Fuel Programme: 41 MT of Crude, LNG and LPG Reserves — and Why Storage Alone Is Not Enough

India is considering a decade-long strategic fuel programme to add approximately 28 MT of crude oil, 9 MT of LNG and 4 MT of LPG storage — a response to West Asia-related supply disruptions — but analysts warn that energy security requires an integrated system of reserves, shipping, pipelines and governance, not storage alone.

◈ Background & Context

India's vulnerability to energy supply disruption was exposed by escalating West Asia tensions.

As a major crude importer with over 85% import dependence, any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz — through which a large share of India's energy imports flow — would directly threaten refinery operations, power generation and LPG availability for 300+ million households.

India already operates Phase I of its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) — 5.33 MT of underground crude storage at Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru and Padur.

A further 6.5 MT has been approved under Phase II (Chandikhol and Padur), but execution is delayed by land acquisition and PPP finalisation issues. For LPG, two small underground caverns (Visakhapatnam and Mangaluru) hold about 0.14 MT.

For natural gas, India has no operational underground storage facility — a critical gap.

India's crude storage system is relatively mature; LPG storage is proven but tiny; natural gas storage is the most critical gap — and the 9 MT LNG proposal is an order of magnitude larger than any existing Indian gas storage plan.
LNG Storage — Clearing the Confusion
  • LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is stored as a cryogenic liquid at −162°C, requiring specialised insulated tanks and boil-off gas management — distinct from regasification terminals.
  • Underground gas storage (depleted reservoirs or salt caverns) involves injecting regasified natural gas underground — a completely separate infrastructure from LNG import terminals.
  • India's sedimentary basins (Krishna-Godavari, Cambay, Mumbai Offshore, Rajasthan) offer geological potential for underground gas storage, but geological assessment, well-testing and infrastructure commissioning take years.
  • PNGRB–ICF study (narrower scenario): estimated only ~0.56-0.6 MT of LNG storage needed for a 20-day priority-sector stress scenario at ~$1 billion — the proposed 9 MT target is a much broader strategic objective.

The black-necked stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus) is one of India's largest wetland birds — standing nearly 1.3 metres tall with a distinctive black neck, iridescent green-and-black wings and coral-red legs.

Salmonella Infections: India Needs to Look Beyond Typhoid and Diarrhoea

While India's public health system focuses on typhoid as the primary Salmonella threat, non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections — spread through poultry, eggs and contaminated food — represent a far larger but underdiagnosed burden, increasingly complicated by antimicrobial resistance that is limiting treatment options.

Salmonella is a diverse bacterial genus that causes a spectrum of infections. Typhoid (Salmonella Typhi) and paratyphoid (S. Paratyphi) receive the most policy attention.
