Should Generative AI Be Banned Among Younger Students in Schools?
A New York City moratorium on generative AI in public schools up to Class 8 has revived a debate that India is yet to settle through policy — should young children be kept away from AI tools in the classroom, or taught to use them under guardrails?
New York City's mayor announced a one-year moratorium on most generative AI tools for public school students up to Class 8, for the 2026–27 academic year, on the reasoning that young children need human connection and independent problem-solving rather than algorithmic assistance.
