UPSC Anthropology Paper I 2026: Full Analysis, Chapter Weightage & Trend Shift
A question-by-question breakdown of Anthropology Paper I of UPSC CSE Mains 2026. The paper's single most consequential feature is the balance: Biological Anthropology carried 185 marks against Socio-Cultural's 165, inverting the assumption many candidates prepare on. Anthropological Theories was the largest individual unit at 65 marks — and three of its four questions were comparative or applied rather than expository. Applied anthropology, usually treated as filler, supplied a further 25.
The One-Line Verdict
Anthropology attracts many candidates from social-science backgrounds who prepare the socio-cultural half thoroughly and treat physical anthropology as an obstacle to be survived. This paper made that strategy expensive. Somatotyping and the Heath-Carter method, Paranthropus, Strepsirhini against Haplorhini, chromosomal aberrations, nuclear against mitochondrial DNA, modes of inheritance, canalization and catch-up growth, genetic polymorphism, fertility and mortality, ergonomics and serogenetics — the biological side alone carried 185 of 400 marks. The socio-cultural questions, meanwhile, were mostly comparative rather than descriptive.

Biological anthropology took 185 of 400 marks — 46% of the paper. A candidate who prepared socio-cultural anthropology thoroughly and skimmed the biological half could reach at most 165 marks of familiar territory, and would then be forced into unfamiliar questions to complete the required 250.
The biological questions were also technically specific: not "discuss human growth" but canalization and catch-up growth; not "discuss primates" but Strepsirhini against Haplorhini; not "discuss genetics" but numerical aberrations in autosomes and sex chromosomes. Conceptual familiarity was insufficient; the paper demanded precise terminology.

How This Paper Differs — Six Observable Shifts
These are pattern-level judgments drawn from the internal evidence of this paper, read against the character of recent Anthropology Paper I papers. They are teaching observations rather than claims about verified year-by-year statistics.
1. The biological half outweighed the socio-cultural half
Ten of the twenty-eight question parts were biological, carrying 185 marks against socio-cultural's 165. Anthropology draws many candidates from humanities and social-science backgrounds precisely because the socio-cultural syllabus feels tractable, and physical anthropology is often prepared defensively. This paper reversed the incentive. It is worth noting that both this year's Rank 7 and Rank 82 Anthropology candidates came from science and engineering backgrounds, which the paper's composition rewards.
2. Theory questions are comparative and applied, not expository
Anthropological Theories carried 65 marks across four questions, and only one of them asked for a theory in isolation. The rest asked candidates to use theory: structuralism applied to caste and gender (Q2c); Leach compared with Geertz (Q8a); personality types leading to national character (Q8c). Even the White question is framed critically — critically discuss how culture determines behaviour. Memorising the schools was not enough; the paper wanted them operated.
3. Applied anthropology is now a scoring chapter
Anthropometry in ergonomics (Q5d), serogenetics and cytogenetics in reproductive biology with its ethical dimension (Q8b), and somatotyping applied to sports sciences within Q2(a) — together roughly 35 marks touching applied anthropology. This is the chapter most often left to the final week. It also connects the optional to real professional practice, which is exactly the direction the syllabus's own listing of forensic anthropology, defence equipment design and genetic counselling points.
4. Ethics runs as a deliberate thread
Ethics in anthropological fieldwork (Q5a) and the ethical issues in reproductive technology (Q8b) appear in the same section. Fieldwork ethics covers informed consent from communities that may be non-literate, the anonymisation of sites and informants, reciprocity and benefit-sharing, the colonial legacy of extractive research, and the researcher's obligations when observing practices they find troubling. Reproductive ethics covers sex selection, embryo screening, surrogacy and commodification, consent in genetic testing, and the eugenic risk latent in genetic counselling. Preparing them as one theme is efficient.
5. Five comparative stems reward paired preparation
Heath-Carter against Sheldon (Q2a), ethnoarchaeology against classical archaeology (Q1e), nuclear against mitochondrial DNA (Q5b), Strepsirhini against Haplorhini (Q6c), and Leach against Geertz (Q8a). In each case the marks lie in the points of difference, and a candidate who has pre-built the comparison table answers in a fraction of the time.
6. Q3(c) crosses into Paper II territory
Palaeolithic sites of the Himalayan and Sub-Himalayan region is Indian prehistory, which sits in the Paper II syllabus under the evolution of Indian culture and civilisation, while Paper I covers prehistoric cultures in general outline. Candidates who compartmentalise the two papers would have hesitated. The practical lesson is that Indian prehistory should be prepared once, for both papers.
The UPSC Anthropology syllabus lists Paranthropus under the heading "Homo erectus: Africa (Paranthropus)". This is a long-standing anomaly in the syllabus text: Paranthropus is the genus of the robust australopithecines — P. aethiopicus, P. boisei and P. robustus — and is a side branch of the hominin tree, not a form of Homo erectus.
The disciplined answer states the correct phylogenetic position — a robust australopithecine lineage in East and South Africa, roughly 2.7 to 1.2 million years ago, characterised by the sagittal crest, massive post-canine dentition, flaring zygomatics and a dish-shaped face adapted to heavy mastication of tough vegetation, and generally regarded as an evolutionary dead end rather than ancestral to Homo. Reproducing the syllabus heading as though Paranthropus were Homo erectus is the error an examiner who knows the palaeoanthropology will notice at once.

What This Means for 2027 Aspirants — Five Strategy Shifts
- Give physical anthropology equal or greater time. With 185 of 400 marks, the biological half is not a supporting section. Build definitional precision in growth (canalization, catch-up growth, secular trend, somatotype), genetics (polymorphism, aberrations, pedigree symbols, inheritance patterns), primatology (the Strepsirhini-Haplorhini division and its diagnostic traits), and palaeoanthropology (each hominin's phylogenetic position, dates, sites and diagnostic morphology).
- Prepare theories as tools, not as summaries. For each school, hold one line on what it explains, one Indian or ethnographic application, and one named critic. Then pre-build the comparisons the examiner keeps asking for: Leach against Geertz, Lévi-Strauss against Leach, White against Steward, Malinowski against Radcliffe-Brown, Benedict against Mead.
- Build a comparison bank. Five stems this year were explicit comparisons. Heath-Carter against Sheldon, ethnoarchaeology against classical archaeology, nuclear against mitochondrial DNA, relative against absolute dating, emic against etic, band against tribe against chiefdom against state. Each as a five-row table.
- Do not treat applied anthropology as filler. Ergonomics and anthropometry, forensic anthropology and personal identification, sports anthropology, nutritional anthropology, genetic counselling and DNA technology carried around 35 marks here. These topics also supply the ethical dimension the paper asked for twice.
- Prepare Indian prehistory once, for both papers. Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic sites of the subcontinent, with their tool typologies, sit in Paper II but surfaced in Paper I this year. Soan, Hunsgi, Attirampakkam, Bhimbetka and Burzahom should be available regardless of which paper asks.
Model Answer Structures for the Highest-Value Questions
Q8(a) — Leach's structuralism against Geertz's interpretive anthropology (20 marks)
- Leach: a British structuralist influenced by but critical of Lévi-Strauss. In Political Systems of Highland Burma he treats social structure as a set of ideal models — gumsa and gumlao — between which real communities oscillate, so structure is a repertoire of possibilities rather than an equilibrium. He emphasises binary opposition, the logic of relations, and the analyst's model as a heuristic. His individualism and attention to change distinguish him from Radcliffe-Brownian functionalism.
- Geertz: interpretive anthropology treats culture as a web of significance and the anthropologist's task as thick description — recovering the layered meanings of an act for its participants, famously through the wink-versus-twitch distinction and the Balinese cockfight read as a text the Balinese tell themselves about themselves.
- The core opposition: Leach seeks the underlying logical structure beneath surface variation, aiming at something explanatory and comparative; Geertz denies that such deep structures are the point, holding that meaning is local, contextual and irreducible, and that anthropology is interpretive rather than a search for laws.
- Assess both: structuralism is criticised for imposing the analyst's binaries and for weak treatment of agency and history; interpretive anthropology is criticised for unverifiability, for the privileged status it grants the ethnographer's reading, and for making comparison difficult. Note that the post-modern turn pressed both critiques further.
Q2(a) — Somatotype and the Heath-Carter method (20 marks)
- Define: somatotype is the quantified description of body shape and composition, expressed as a three-numeral rating of endomorphy (relative fatness), mesomorphy (relative musculoskeletal robustness) and ectomorphy (relative linearity).
- Sheldon's original method: photoscopic, based on standardised photographs, using a seven-point scale, and treating somatotype as fixed and genetically determined — with the additional and now discredited claim of a correspondence between physique and temperament.
- Heath-Carter advantages, which the question asks for: anthropometric rather than photoscopic, so it is objective and replicable; uses measurable variables — skinfolds, breadths, girths and height — rather than visual rating; the scale is open-ended rather than capped at seven; it applies across sexes, ages and populations; it recognises that somatotype changes with nutrition, training and age; and it requires no photography, removing a practical and ethical obstacle.
- Sports science applications: talent identification and event selection by matching physique profiles to sport demands; monitoring training and nutrition through changes in the rating; injury-risk assessment; and comparative profiling of elite athletes across disciplines. Add the caution that somatotype is one predictor among many and must not become a deterministic screening tool.
Q6(a) — Determining whether a disease is inherited (20 marks)
- Establish the question: distinguishing genetic from environmental causation, and then identifying the mode of transmission.
- Family and pedigree study: construct the pedigree with standard symbols across three generations, then read the pattern — autosomal dominant (every affected individual has an affected parent, both sexes equally affected, vertical transmission); autosomal recessive (skips generations, consanguinity raises risk, both sexes affected); X-linked recessive (males predominantly affected, transmitted through carrier females, no male-to-male transmission); X-linked dominant; and mitochondrial (exclusively maternal transmission).
- Twin study: comparing concordance in monozygotic against dizygotic pairs, with the co-twin control method and studies of twins reared apart to separate genetic from shared-environmental effects.
- Cytogenetic and molecular methods: karyotyping for chromosomal disorders, biochemical assay, linkage analysis, and DNA sequencing for the specific locus.
- Illustrate: Huntington's disease as autosomal dominant, sickle-cell anaemia and thalassaemia as autosomal recessive with the malaria-selection connection, haemophilia and colour blindness as X-linked recessive, and Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy as mitochondrial.
