Best Optional Subject for UPSC 2027: Success Rate Data What the Official Numbers Show, and What They Don't

Your optional carries 500 of the 1,750 written Mains marks, about 28.6% of your written score. This guide uses UPSC's own appeared-versus-recommended data for CSE 2021 and CSE 2022 (the latest published) to show which optionals perform well, why the rankings shift, and how to choose for Mains 2027.

In CSE 2021, Commerce & Accountancy had a 15.0% success rate, the highest among optionals with 100+ candidates. A year later, it fell to 9.8%. The syllabus didn't change. The subject didn't get harder. A small group of candidates simply performed differently.

That one example explains most of what goes wrong when aspirants search for the best optional subject for UPSC 2027. Success rate data is genuinely useful, but only if you read it the way a statistician would, not the way an advertisement presents it. Keep the official UPSC Optional Subject Syllabus 2027 open as you read this guide.

At Legacy IAS Academy, we see this decision cost aspirants more time than almost any other. Some switch optionals twice. Others pick a subject because a topper did. This guide sets out the official numbers, explains what they actually measure, and gives you a framework to choose once and commit.

What "Success Rate" Actually Measures

UPSC's annual reports compare two numbers for each optional: candidates who appeared in Mains with that optional, and candidates finally recommended for appointment. Success rate is the second divided by the first.

  • It is not an optional-paper score. It reflects performance in GS, Essay, the optional and the interview combined. See the UPSC CSE 2025 cut-off marks for the Mains and final scores involved.
  • It starts from Mains, not from applicants. Everyone in the denominator has already cleared Prelims.
  • It reflects who chooses a subject. Doctors choose Medical Science; strong Hindi writers choose Hindi Literature. The rate measures those candidate pools as much as the subject itself.

The latest optional-wise table UPSC has published is for CSE 2022, in its 74th Annual Report. Any website showing a "2025" or "2026 optional success rate" is either relabelling older data or using unofficial estimates. Always check which exam year a figure refers to.

2021 vs 2022: Why Optional Rankings Keep Shifting

Put two consecutive years side by side and the "highest success rate" rankings start to wobble.

OptionalCSE 2021CSE 2022Change
Commerce & Accountancy15.0%9.8%▼ 5.2 pts
Economics13.2%10.3%▼ 2.9 pts

Political Science & IR8.9%7.9%▼ 1.0 pt
Sociology8.5%7.8%▼ 0.7 pts
Anthropology7.8%7.7%▼ 0.1 pts

The pattern is clear. Subjects with smaller pools swing sharply, while the large-pool humanities optionals barely move. When only 140–250 people take a subject, a dozen extra selections can shift its rate by several points.

A 15% success rate from 140 candidates and an 8% rate from 2,000 candidates are not the same kind of evidence. The first is one year's result. The second is a reliable average. Pick your optional on fit, and use the data only to check you aren't walking into an unusually tough field. — Legacy IAS Faculty

Four Insights for Choosing the Best Optional Subject for UPSC 2027

  1. The "Big 4" are statistically safe, not special. PSIR, Sociology, Anthropology and Geography all landed between 7.5% and 7.9% in 2022. None gives a clear advantage. What they offer is plenty of study material, past papers and peers to learn with.
  2. Specialist optionals reward specialists. Medical Science (11.6%) and Electrical Engineering (12.0%) did well, likely because the people choosing them already know the subject deeply. That advantage doesn't transfer to someone without that background.
  3. Literature optionals deserve a serious look if you have the command. Hindi Literature's 14.6% from 288 candidates was among the highest that year. It is only realistic if you write well in that language.
  4. Engineers mostly don't choose engineering optionals. In CSE 2022, 53.1% of recommended candidates had engineering degrees, but 84.1% of recommended candidates took humanities optionals. Your degree is one input to the decision, not the answer.

A Five-Step Framework to Choose Your Optional

  1. Shortlist two or three subjects based on your degree, interest and overlap with the UPSC Mains Syllabus 2027.
  2. Read the official UPSC syllabus for each, word by word. Mark every unit you couldn't explain today.
  3. Solve three recent papers from our UPSC Mains previous year question papers. Write two timed answers per subject. This one exercise settles more choices than any ranking.
  4. Check that feedback is available. A mentor or reliable model answers for evaluation matter more than a big pile of notes. Our UPSC Mains Test Series and Mains Mentorship Program include evaluated answer writing.
  5. Commit and don't switch. Switching after three months usually costs more than any small difference in success rates.
