Every January, thousands of serious UPSC aspirants make the same mistake. They spend months preparing for the exam, then rush the application in the final 48 hours. Some pick the wrong exam centre, some pick an optional they haven't fully decided on, and a few miss the deadline entirely.

The UPSC Notification 2027 releases on 13 January 2027, and the application window closes on 2 February 2027. That's just three weeks to get everything right. This guide covers what to expect: likely vacancies, eligibility rules, fees, the step-by-step application process, and the mistakes we see aspirants make every year at Legacy IAS Academy.

Let's make sure your application is the easy part.

UPSC Notification 2027: Key Dates at a Glance

UPSC released its official calendar for 2027 on 20 May 2026. Here are the dates that matter for Civil Services aspirants:

EventDate

UPSC Prelims 202723 May 2027 (Sunday)
UPSC Mains 2027Starts 20 August 2027 (5 days)

The Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Prelims is held in the same sitting as CSE Prelims, on 23 May 2027. You apply for both through one form.

📌 Legacy IAS Insight

Counting back from the notification date, you have roughly 7 months until Prelims. That's enough time for one complete revision cycle and 25–30 full-length mock tests, but only if you start structured practice by November.

UPSC Vacancies 2027: What to Expect

UPSC won't confirm the exact number of vacancies until the notification is out. Past trends give a useful picture, though.

Exam YearApproximate Vacancies
CSE 20241,105
CSE 2025979
CSE 2026933 (including 33 for PwBD)

The trend has been downward for three years. Our honest expectation is that the CSE 2027 number will fall in the 900–1,000 range, but nobody can predict it with certainty. Treat any website that gives you an "exact" 2027 figure before 13 January with caution.

Why the vacancy number matters less than you think

Aspirants often panic when vacancies drop. Here's the thing: a drop of 50 seats changes the Prelims cut-off by only a few marks. What decides your result is your accuracy in Prelims and your answer quality in Mains, not whether there are 930 or 980 seats.

"We've seen aspirants lose three months worrying about vacancy numbers. The ones who clear focus on what they control — their mock test scores, their answer-writing speed, their revision. The vacancy count is noise."

UPSC Eligibility Criteria 2027

Before you start filling the form, check these four things carefully. A mistake here can't be fixed later.

1. Nationality

For the IAS, IPS and IFS, you must be a citizen of India. For other services, certain categories of non-citizens (such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan) may be eligible, subject to conditions in the notification.

2. Educational Qualification

You need a graduate degree from a recognised university, in any stream. Final-year students can apply too. You'll need to submit proof of passing before the Mains application stage, so plan your final exams accordingly.

3. Age Limit for UPSC 2027

The age is calculated as on 1 August 2027. You must be at least 21 and must not have turned 32 (for the General category). Based on this, General category candidates should be born between 2 August 1995 and 1 August 2006. Confirm this against the official notification once it's out.

CategoryUpper Age LimitMaximum Attempts
General / EWS32 years6
OBC35 years9
SC / ST37 yearsUnlimited (till age limit)
PwBD42 years (General)9 (General/EWS/OBC)

Additional relaxations apply for ex-servicemen and certain other groups. The notification lists these in detail.

4. Number of Attempts

Appearing in even one Prelims paper counts as an attempt. Applying and not appearing does not. If you're not ready, it's better to skip the exam entirely than to sit for just one paper and lose an attempt.

Rules for Already-Selected Candidates

The 2026 notification brought in stricter rules for candidates who have already been selected through an earlier exam. Under these rules, a candidate already appointed to the IAS or IFS is not eligible to appear in the exam. UPSC also introduced a one-time training exemption for those who want to improve their rank in the next cycle.

If you're a serving officer or were recently allocated a service, read this section of the 2027 notification word by word. Expect similar or tighter rules to continue.

UPSC Application Fee 2027

The fee has remained modest for years:

  • ₹100 for General, OBC and EWS male candidates
  • No fee for women candidates, SC/ST candidates and PwBD candidates

You can pay online through net banking, UPI or card, or in cash at an SBI branch. Don't leave the cash payment option for the last day, because it closes earlier than the online deadline.

How to Apply for UPSC 2027: Step-by-Step

UPSC updated its application system in 2026. It now uses a Universal Registration Number (URN) that stays the same for all future UPSC exams, while the application number changes with each exam. If you registered in 2026, your URN will carry over.

  1. Go to the official portal: upsconline.nic.in. Don't use any other website.
  2. Create or log in to your URN account with a valid email address and mobile number. You'll use these for years, so pick ones that won't change.
  3. Complete your Common Application Form (CAF): personal details, education, category and ID proof. Check every spelling against your Class 10 certificate.
  4. Select the exam (CSE 2027) and fill in the exam-specific details: exam centre, optional subject, Mains medium, and language paper.
  5. Upload your photo and signature in the specified format and size.
  6. Pay the fee (if applicable) and submit.
  7. Download and save your application as a PDF. Keep a printed copy as well.

Choosing your exam centre: do it on Day 1

Popular centres like Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad fill up fast. UPSC allots centres on a first-come, first-served basis, and once a centre reaches capacity, it disappears from the list. Aspirants who apply in the last week often end up travelling to another city.

5 Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

In our experience mentoring aspirants at Legacy IAS, these are the errors that cause the most stress:

  • Waiting until the final days. The UPSC website slows down heavily in the last 48 hours.
  • Choosing an optional subject casually. You can't change it after the correction window closes, and it's worth 500 marks in Mains.
  • Name mismatch. The name on your application must match your ID proof and certificates exactly.
  • Wrong category or EWS certificate date. Certificates must be valid as per the cut-off date given in the notification.
  • Not saving the final PDF. You'll need it if any dispute or correction comes up later.

Let's be honest: the application is the one part of UPSC that is entirely within your control. There's no reason to lose marks, or an attempt, because of a rushed form.

What to Do Between Now and 13 January

The notification is about three months away. Here's how to use that time well:

  • Finalise your optional subject by November, so the form is a formality, not a decision.
  • Get your documents ready now: degree certificate (or final-year proof), category certificate, EWS certificate, and a valid photo ID.
  • Start Prelims mock tests, since only about 7 months will remain once the notification is out.
  • Complete one full revision of static GS: Polity, Economy, Geography and Modern History.
💡

Key Takeaways

  • Mark 13 January to 2 February 2027 in your calendar, and plan to apply in the first week.
  • Expect vacancies broadly in line with recent years, and don't let the exact number distract your preparation.
  • Check your age limit and remaining attempts now. One Prelims paper attempted counts as one attempt.
  • Lock your optional subject and exam centre preference before the notification releases.
  • Keep your URN login, documents and photo ready in advance so the form takes under an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the UPSC Notification 2027 be released?

As per the official UPSC calendar, the notification releases on 13 January 2027 and the last date to apply is 2 February 2027. These dates can change in rare cases, so keep checking upsc.gov.in.

Can final-year students apply for UPSC 2027?

Yes. Final-year degree students can apply for Prelims. You must submit proof of passing your graduation along with the Mains application (DAF), so make sure your results are out by then.

How many vacancies will UPSC 2027 have?

UPSC hasn't announced this yet. For reference, CSE 2026 had about 933 vacancies and CSE 2025 had 979, so a similar range is a reasonable expectation.

No. Only appearing in at least one Prelims paper counts as an attempt. If you apply but don't sit for the exam, your attempt is not used.

Can I change my optional subject after applying?

Only during the correction window UPSC provides after the application deadline. After that, it can't be changed, so decide carefully before you apply.
