The 700-Word Essay Blueprint

Every essay — regardless of section — must follow this structure to score 40+ out of 50.

📝 Legacy IAS Essay Structure (700 words = ~4 paragraphs + intro + conclusion)

1
Introduction
~80 words
Start with a quote, statistic, anecdote, or paradox. Define the topic. State why it matters now.
2–4
Body (3 paragraphs)
~480 words
Para 1: Historical/background dimension. Para 2: Current challenges & evidence. Para 3: Solutions/way forward with policy links.
5
Multidimensional
Built-in
Cover at least 3 dimensions: political, social, economic, environmental, cultural — whichever apply.
6
Conclusion
~80 words
Synthesise, not summarise. End with a forward-looking statement, vision, or powerful quote.
💡
Start with a Hook

A well-chosen quote, surprising statistic, or vivid anecdote scores more than a dictionary definition. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page” works better than “Tourism is defined as…”

⚖️
Balance Both Sides

Even for Section A (social/cultural), present challenges alongside achievements. Even for Section C (disasters), present both human failure and institutional response. One-sided essays score below average.

🔗
Connect to Policy

Examiners reward candidates who link essay themes to government policy — PM schemes, constitutional provisions, international agreements. A Section B essay on environment should cite Paris Agreement and India’s NDC targets.

📊
Use Data Sparingly

2–3 well-chosen data points per essay are enough. More data without analysis looks like a GS answer, not an essay. Data serves the argument — it doesn’t replace it.

✍️
Language & Tone

Write in a formal, analytical tone — neither academic jargon nor conversational slang. Avoid very long sentences (20+ words). Each paragraph should open with a clear topic sentence.

⏱️
Time Management

3 hours for 3 essays = 60 minutes each. Spend 5 minutes planning each essay (mind map on rough paper). Stop at 700 words — going far beyond dilutes quality and wastes time.

Section A — Literature, Culture, Social & Political

Choose 1 topic from 3 sub-themes: (1) Literature & Culture, (2) Social sphere, (3) Political sphere

A

Section A — Literature, Culture, Society & Politics

~85% years — 3 topics offered
📚
A1 — Literature & Culture
Indian classical heritage · Folk traditions · Modern literature · Cultural identity · Language politics
~85% years Medium difficulty
PYQ Essay Topics (Literature & Culture)
(Features of Indian culture and modernity)
(Folk literature and national consciousness)
(Global significance of Hindi literature)
(Interrelation of art, culture and society)
(Role of language in national unity)
(Indian cinema and its social impact)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Historical roots of the cultural theme (ancient/medieval)
  • Colonial impact on literature/culture
  • Post-independence renaissance and state patronage
  • Globalisation threat to regional/folk traditions
  • Constitutional protection (Articles 29–30, Eighth Schedule)
  • Way forward: digital preservation, UNESCO recognition
Legacy IAS Strategy: Literature & Culture essays score well when you connect the cultural theme to India’s civilisational identity. Avoid being purely descriptive — ask “what does this cultural form tell us about Indian society?” Great openers: Rabindranath Tagore quotes, Nehru’s Discovery of India references, or a folk story metaphor. Always conclude with the threat of globalisation AND the opportunity it presents (global audience for Indian content).
👥
A2 — Social Sphere
Gender equality · Caste & social justice · Communalism · Poverty · Education · Women empowerment
~90% years High demand — highest marks
PYQ Essay Topics (Social Sphere)
(Women empowerment: challenges and possibilities)
(Casteism in India: problem and solution)
(Communal harmony and national unity)
(Education and social development)
(Unemployment: causes, impact and solution)
(Problem of child labour in India)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Constitutional/legal framework (relevant Articles)
  • Data: NFHS-5, ASER, NSSO — 1-2 statistics
  • Root causes (historical, structural, economic)
  • Government schemes and their impact
  • Civil society, NGO, and community role
  • International comparison and best practices
Legacy IAS Strategy: Social sphere essays are the most commonly chosen — and the most competitive. To stand out, use the “structural vs individual” framework: social problems have both structural causes (caste hierarchy, patriarchy) and individual dimensions (attitudes, choices). Policy recommendations must be specific — don’t just say “more education,” say “NEP 2020’s foundational literacy goals + gender-sensitive curriculum.” Always end with an optimistic but realistic conclusion quoting India’s constitutional commitment to justice.
🏛️
A3 — Political Sphere
Democracy · Electoral reforms · Federalism · Governance · Corruption · Civil society & state
~80% years Medium difficulty — less chosen
PYQ Essay Topics (Political Sphere)
(Role of voter in democracy)
(Corruption — democracy’s greatest enemy)
(Indian Parliament and its challenges)
(Criminalisation of politics)
(Need for electoral reform)
(Good governance and public life)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Constitutional vision vs ground reality gap
  • Historical evolution of the political issue
  • Comparative perspective (other democracies)
  • Supreme Court / Election Commission role
  • Civil society and media’s accountability function
  • Specific reform proposals (Law Commission, ARC)
Legacy IAS Strategy: Political essays are the least chosen in Section A — which means examiners see fewer of them, and a well-written one stands out more. Use Ambedkar’s famous Constituent Assembly speech warning about contradictions between political equality and social inequality as your opening frame. Link every political problem to its institutional solution — examiners reward candidates who know that “system reform” matters more than “individual behaviour change.”

Section B — Science, Environment, Economy & Agriculture

Choose 1 topic from 3 sub-themes: (1) Science, Environment & Technology, (2) Economic Sphere, (3) Agriculture, Industry & Trade

B

Section B — Science, Economy, Agriculture & Industry

Data-driven essays — current affairs essential
🔬
B1 — Science, Environment & Technology
Climate change · AI & tech ethics · Renewable energy · Biodiversity · Space · Biotechnology · Digital India
~88% years Most popular choice in Section B
PYQ Essay Topics (Science, Env & Tech)
(Climate change — humanity’s greatest threat)
(AI: opportunities and challenges)
(Renewable energy and India’s future)
(Environmental pollution)
(Space exploration and humanity)
(Digital India: possibilities and challenges)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Scientific/technical explanation (accessible, not jargon)
  • Global context: IPCC, COP, SDG targets
  • India-specific impact and vulnerability
  • Government policy: national missions, schemes
  • Technology as solution AND as problem
  • International cooperation requirements
Legacy IAS Strategy: Science & environment essays are most popular in Section B — pick this when you’re confident about current affairs. Climate change is a recurring theme — prepare a “climate change master essay” with adaptable paragraphs. Always quote Paris Agreement (1.5°C target), India’s NDC (500 GW non-fossil by 2030), and Chandrayaan-3/ISRO for science essays. The opening line for AI essays: “Artificial intelligence is not the future — it is the present, rewriting the rules of every human endeavour.”
📈
B2 — Economic Sphere
Inequality · Poverty · GDP growth · Fiscal policy · Globalisation · Startup India · Digital economy
~82% years Medium difficulty — needs data
PYQ Essay Topics (Economic Sphere)
(Challenges of India’s economic growth)
(Inequality and inclusive growth)
(Startup revolution in India)
(Impact of globalisation on Indian economy)
(Rural economy and agrarian crisis)
(Crisis of unemployment in India)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Macroeconomic indicators: GDP, inflation, fiscal deficit
  • Structural challenges: informality, skilling gap
  • Policy analysis: budget provisions, PLI, MGNREGS
  • International economic linkages (WTO, trade wars)
  • Social dimension of economic change (who benefits?)
  • India’s potential: demographic dividend, digital economy
Legacy IAS Strategy: Economic essays must balance data with analysis. Use the “paradox” opening: “India is the world’s 5th largest economy and yet home to the world’s largest number of malnourished children — this contradiction defines our development challenge.” Quote the Economic Survey or Budget for credibility. Always distinguish between GDP growth (aggregate) and per capita income (individual) — this distinction separates average answers from excellent ones.
🌾
B3 — Agriculture, Industry & Trade
Farmer distress · Agricultural reform · MSMEs · Make in India · Export promotion · Food security
~78% years Easier — less competition
PYQ Essay Topics (Agriculture & Industry)
(Role of modern technology in agriculture)
(Indian farmer: challenges and solutions)
(Food security and India)
(Small & cottage industries — India’s backbone)
(Self-reliant India and industrial development)
(Trade and commerce potential in India)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Current status with data (contribution to GDP, employment)
  • Structural problems (fragmentation, credit, market access)
  • Government reforms: MSP, PM-KISAN, ODOP, PLI
  • Technology opportunity: e-NAM, drone farming, FPOs
  • WTO compatibility and export competitiveness
  • Vision: doubling farmers’ income, Viksit Bharat 2047
Legacy IAS Strategy: Agriculture essays are the least chosen in Section B — which is a strategic opportunity. A well-prepared agriculture essay will be distinctive. The central tension is: “Agriculture employs 44% of India’s workforce but contributes only 16% to GDP — this productivity gap is the core challenge.” Link farmer distress to structural solutions (FPOs, contract farming, cold chains), not just more subsidies. Quote Swaminathan Commission’s C2+50% MSP formula for bonus marks.

Section C — National Events, Natural Disasters & Development

Choose 1 topic from 3 sub-themes: (1) National & International Events, (2) Natural Calamities, (3) National Development Programmes

C

Section C — Events, Disasters & Development Programmes

Current affairs critical — update every month
🌐
C1 — National & International Events
India’s G20 Presidency · Russia-Ukraine · India-China · Global institutions · Geopolitics · India’s soft power
~85% years Highest current-affairs demand
PYQ Essay Topics (National & International Events)
(India: towards the 3rd largest economy)
(G20 presidency and India’s role)
(Russia-Ukraine war: impact on world)
(Post-COVID world order)
(India-China border dispute)
(India’s foreign policy: new directions)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Background of the event/issue (historical roots)
  • India’s specific position and national interest
  • Geopolitical implications: regional and global
  • Economic dimensions: trade, investment, energy
  • Humanitarian dimension where applicable
  • India’s role: bridge-builder, Voice of Global South
Legacy IAS Strategy: National/international events essays demand the most current affairs preparation. The key is to avoid news reporting — an essay is not a news article. Take the event as a lens to examine deeper structural issues. For India’s G20 Presidency, don’t just describe events — analyse what it says about India’s growing influence and what challenges remain. Always end with India’s constructive role — examiners prefer optimistic, solution-oriented conclusions.
🌊
C2 — Natural Calamities — Landslide, Earthquake, Flood, Drought
Disaster management · Climate-disaster link · NDMA · Sendai Framework · Community resilience · Early warning
~80% years Easier to structure — predictable format
PYQ Essay Topics (Natural Calamities)
(Earthquake and disaster management)
(Flood: nature’s wrath or human failure?)
(Drought and water crisis)
(Landslide: causes and prevention)
(India’s progress in cyclone management)
(Climate change and natural disasters)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • Scientific explanation of the disaster type
  • India’s vulnerability: geographic, demographic reasons
  • Climate change intensifying the disaster frequency
  • DM Act 2005, NDMA, SDRF — institutional framework
  • Case study: a specific recent disaster (India)
  • Sendai Framework 2015–2030 — India’s commitments
Legacy IAS Strategy: Natural calamity essays have a predictable structure — which is both an advantage (easy to plan) and a risk (everyone writes the same thing). Differentiate by using the “human dimension” angle: disasters are natural phenomena, but their impact is determined by human choices — urban planning, deforestation, building codes, early warning investment. Contrast India’s improved cyclone management (Odisha model) with its persistent flood problem in Bihar/Assam to show nuanced understanding.
🏗️
C3 — National Development Programmes & Projects
PM Gati Shakti · Smart Cities · Jal Jeevan Mission · PMAY · Aspirational Districts · Make in India · NEP 2020
~82% years Medium — scheme knowledge needed
PYQ Essay Topics (Development Programmes)
(Smart City Mission: possibilities and challenges)
(Jal Jeevan Mission and rural India)
(Aspirational Districts Programme)
(NEP 2020: a new direction)
(Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign)
(PM Awas Yojana)
Recommended Dimensions to Cover
  • The problem the programme addresses (why it was needed)
  • Programme structure, targets, and timeline
  • Progress achieved: quantitative data
  • Implementation challenges: capacity, coordination, funds
  • Success stories: district/state level examples
  • Way forward: convergence with SDGs, long-term vision
Legacy IAS Strategy: Development programme essays are chosen by candidates who have studied GS Papers V, VI well — the overlap is significant. The key is critical evaluation, not just description. Use the “promise vs performance” framework: state the programme’s ambitious goals, then honestly evaluate what has been achieved and what gaps remain. Always mention implementation challenges — not to criticise the government, but to show analytical maturity. End with constructive reform suggestions.
