About Namami Gange Programme

Focus: GS III- Environment and Ecology

Why in News?

Namami Gange Programme was launched in June 2014 for a period up to 31st March, 2021 to rejuvenate River Ganga and its tributaries with a budgetary outlay of Rs.20,000 crore. Considering the need and spread of the Programme, Government of India has further approved Namami Gange Mission-II with a budgetary outlay of Rs.22,500 crore till 2026.

About Namami Gange programme

Nodal: Ministry of Jal Shakti.

  • It is an Integrated Conservation Mission, approved as a ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution and conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
  • Implemented by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), and its state counterparts—State Programme Management Groups.
