- Gate Closing — Paper 1: 9:00 AM sharp. Candidates arriving after this time will not be permitted entry under any circumstances.
- Exam Start — Paper 1: 9:30 AM. The first 30 minutes are for reading instructions, filling OMR details, and settling in.
- Recommended Arrival — Paper 2: Reach back by 1:15 PM. Do not step out too far during the lunch break.
- Gate Closing — Paper 2: 2:00 PM sharp.
- Exam Start — Paper 2: 2:30 PM.
- Security Frisking: Thorough frisking is conducted at the entrance. Avoid carrying any metallic accessories or large bags to speed up the process.
Documents Required for UPSC Prelims 2026
Carrying the right documents is as important as knowing the syllabus. Missing even one mandatory document can result in denial of entry.

What to Carry and What to Leave at Home
UPSC is extremely strict about prohibited items. Being caught with a prohibited item — even accidentally — can lead to disqualification and debarment from future exams.
✔ Allowed Items
- Printed Admit Card (2 copies)
- Original Photo ID Proof
- 2 recent passport photos
- Black ballpoint pens (at least 2)
- Simple analog watch
- Transparent water bottle
- Chocolates / energy bars (medical need only)
✘ Prohibited Items
- Mobile phones (even switched off)
- Smartwatch / digital watch / fitness band
- Calculator / Bluetooth devices
- Earphones / headphones
- Books, notes, printed material
- Pencils / gel pens / coloured pens
- Bags and unnecessary luggage
- Expensive jewellery and accessories
- Electronic storage devices (pen drives etc.)
OMR Sheet Instructions — Critical Tips to Avoid Mistakes
The OMR sheet is the only record of your answers. Errors in filling it — wrong roll number, incorrect booklet code, overwriting — can invalidate your answer sheet entirely. These mistakes cost candidates their attempts every year.
- Use Black Ballpoint Pen Only: Only black ballpoint pen is officially accepted. Pencils, gel pens, and coloured pens are rejected. Carry at least two black ballpoint pens.
- Fill Roll Number Carefully: Write and bubble your roll number digit by digit. Cross-check it against your admit card before proceeding.
- Fill Test Booklet Series: The booklet code (A, B, C, or D) must be filled correctly in the designated box. Wrong booklet code = wrong answer key = your answers may be marked incorrect.
- No Overwriting: Once a bubble is filled, it cannot be changed. Think before you mark — use the question paper for rough work first.
- Do Not Leave the OMR Blank: Even unattempted questions must have their OMR section clean — no stray marks or smudges near bubbles.
- Do Not Write Anything on OMR Outside Designated Areas: No calculations, no rough work, no signatures in the wrong place.
- Sign and Submit Properly: The invigilator will collect your OMR. Ensure you have signed where required before handing it over. You cannot submit a modified OMR once the exam ends.

UPSC Prelims Dress Code 2026 — What to Wear on Exam Day
UPSC does not prescribe a mandatory dress code. However, your clothing choice can significantly affect your security checking speed, comfort during 4+ hours of examination, and overall experience on exam day.
👔 For Male Candidates
- Light formal or smart casual clothing
- Avoid T-shirts with large logos, slogans, or political prints
- Comfortable lightweight footwear — shoes, sandals, or slippers
- Avoid chains, bracelets, rings, or metallic accessories
- No heavy belts with large metallic buckles

👗 For Female Candidates
- Simple Indian or Western outfits — salwar suits, sarees, or casuals
- Minimal embroidery and simple patterns preferred
- Flat sandals, slippers, or comfortable shoes recommended
- Avoid large earrings, necklaces, bangles, and decorative accessories
- Avoid high heels — long waiting periods can be uncomfortable
- Keep makeup minimal to avoid delays during security verification
Examination Hall Discipline — Rules Every Candidate Must Follow
- Sit Only at Your Allotted Seat: Your roll number is assigned to a specific seat. Sitting elsewhere — even accidentally — can be treated as misconduct and may lead to cancellation of candidature.
- Maintain Absolute Silence: No talking, whispering, or communicating with other candidates from the time you enter the hall until the exam ends. Even asking to borrow a pen can be flagged.
- Do Not Begin Before the Signal: The exam starts only when the invigilator gives the official signal. Opening the question paper before that is a violation.
- Do Not Leave the Hall Early: Candidates are generally not permitted to leave the examination hall during the last 10–15 minutes of the exam. Plan accordingly.
- Cooperate Fully with Invigilators: Any instruction from the invigilator must be followed immediately. Arguing with invigilators is treated as misconduct.
- No Unfair Means of Any Kind: Copying, exchanging answer sheets, carrying cheat sheets, or signalling to other candidates results in immediate cancellation and potential permanent debarment from UPSC examinations.
- Do Not Write After “Pen Down”: When the invigilator announces the end of the paper, all writing must stop immediately. Writing after this announcement is a serious violation.
