Chapter 7 : Lifelines of National Economy

Lifelines of National Economy – Chapter 7

Roadways

India has the second largest road network in the world (~62.16 lakh km, 2020–21). Roadways preceded railways and retain advantages including door-to-door service, lower cost for short distances, and the ability to traverse hilly terrain.

Lower construction cost than railways
Door-to-door service — lower loading/unloading cost
Traverse hilly terrain — higher gradients (e.g., Himalayas)
Feeder to other modes — links rail stations, airports & seaports
