Roadways
India has the second largest road network in the world (~62.16 lakh km, 2020–21). Roadways preceded railways and retain advantages including door-to-door service, lower cost for short distances, and the ability to traverse hilly terrain.

Railways are the principal mode of transportation for freight and passengers in India. Indian Railways — the largest public sector undertaking in the country — has been a great integrating force for 150+ years. Reorganised into 17 Zones.

Pipelines
Used for transporting crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas from oilfields to refineries, fertiliser factories and thermal plants. Initial cost is high but running costs are minimal. Eliminates trans-shipment losses and delays.
Waterways
Cheapest means of transport — fuel-efficient, environment-friendly, best for heavy/bulky goods. India has 14,500 km of inland navigation waterways. Under the National Waterways Act, 2016, 111 waterways declared as National Waterways.

Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Kolkata
Inland riverine (tidal) port serving the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin. Haldia developed as subsidiary port to relieve growing pressure.
Airways
Air travel is the fastest, most comfortable and prestigious mode of transport. Vital in north-eastern states (big rivers, dissected terrain, dense forests, international frontiers). Pawanhans Helicopters Ltd. provides services to ONGC offshore operations and inaccessible areas in NE states, J&K, HP and Uttarakhand.
