UPPSC PCS 2026–2027 Complete Book List — Best Books for Prelims & Mains (Subject-wise)

By Legacy IAS Faculty, Bangalore Covers Prelims + Mains English & Hindi Medium 15 min read
The one rule: Fewer books, more revision, more PYQ practice. Every UPPSC topper used one standard book per subject — read multiple times — alongside 30 years of PYQs and 6 months of focused current affairs. This article gives you the complete, updated book list with all additions for 2026–27 including Art & Culture, Environment, Ethics, and Geography supplements.

The Right Book Philosophy — Less is More

The single biggest mistake UPPSC aspirants make is collecting too many books. The correct formula is one standard book per subject + 30 years of PYQs + last 6 months of current affairs. That is it. Every addition beyond this dilutes preparation time without proportional benefit.

“One book read ten times beats ten books read once. In UPPSC preparation, depth always beats breadth.”

⚠ Avoid These Mistakes: Do NOT buy multiple books on the same subject. Do NOT buy thick “complete guide” compilations as primary sources. Do NOT delay PYQ practice until you “finish” the book. Do NOT prepare more than 6 months of current affairs — it is wasted effort.

1
Indian Polity & Governance
Indian Polity
M. Lakshmikant · McGraw Hill

This is the only Polity book you need. Covers Constitution, Parliament, Judiciary, Federalism, and Panchayati Raj comprehensively. Both Prelims and Mains answers can be built from this one source.

UPPSC-specific focus
  • Chapter on Panchayati Raj — UP Panchayati Raj Act provisions are UPPSC-exclusive
  • Governor’s powers — discretionary provisions tested analytically since 2023
  • All constitutional amendments — 42nd, 73rd, 74th, 101st, 106th
  • Fundamental Rights (Articles 12–35) — tested every single year
2
Physical Geography (Primary)

Prelims + MainsEnglishHindi

This NCERT covers earthquakes, volcanoes, cyclones, ocean currents, glaciers, and climate — the exact concepts UPPSC tests every year in the physical geography section.

Critical chapters for UPPSC
  • Interior of Earth — seismic waves, earthquake zones in India
  • Atmospheric Circulation — cyclone formation, Bay of Bengal
  • Ocean currents — El Niño link to Indian monsoon
  • Read all 16 chapters — every one is relevant to UPPSC
3
Modern History (English Medium)
A Brief History of Modern India
Spectrum Publication
Prelims + MainsEnglish Medium

The gold standard for 1757–1947 modern history. Covers all freedom movements, Governor-Generals, socio-religious reform, and transfer of power in UPPSC-relevant depth.

UPPSC-specific chapters
  • 1857 Revolt — Awadh perspective is critical for UPPSC
  • Kakori Conspiracy & Chauri Chaura — asked in 5 of 7 recent years
  • Socio-religious reform movements — UPPSC tests these extensively
4
History — Hindi Medium (All Periods)
History for UPPCS / State PCS
Kiran Publication
Prelims + MainsHindi Medium

For Hindi-medium candidates, this single book covers Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History — making it the most efficient choice. It replaces both Spectrum and Lucent for Hindi-medium students.

Extra focus areas
  • UP in Ancient period — Prayagraj, Mathura, Varanasi centres
  • Medieval UP — Awadh Nawabs, Mughal administration from UP
  • UP freedom fighters — rarely covered in standard books
5
General Science
General Science
Lucent Publication
PrelimsEnglishHindi

Covers Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science at exactly the Class 9–10 level UPPSC tests. No separate NCERT reading required for science if you use this book thoroughly.

High-frequency UPPSC topics
  • Biology: Human body, diseases, vitamins, hormones (highest weight)
  • Physics: Laws of motion, light, electricity, SI units
  • Chemistry: Acids-bases, periodic table basics, common compounds
  • S&T current (AI, ISRO, Biotech): Cover from monthly current affairs
6
Ancient & Medieval History / GK
General Knowledge
Lucent Publication (English Medium)
PrelimsEnglish Medium

For English-medium candidates, Lucent’s GK covers Ancient and Medieval history concisely, along with art & culture facts, geography tidbits, and science basics — making it a useful revision companion.

Use for UPPSC
  • Ancient: Harappan Civilisation, Mauryan period, Gupta Age
  • Medieval: Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire, Bhakti movement
  • Do NOT use Lucent for Modern History — use Spectrum instead

Art & Culture, Environment, Geography & Ethics Books

Art & Culture
Indian Art and Culture (6th Edition 2026–27)
Nitin Singhania · McGraw Hill
Mains GS-IPrelims

Nitin Singhania’s Art & Culture is the standard reference for UPPSC Mains GS Paper I which covers “salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.” The 6th Edition includes 400+ PYQs integrated chapter-wise.

Key chapters for UPPSC
  • Temple architecture: Nagara, Dravidian, Vesara styles with examples
  • Classical dance forms: Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri
  • Classical music: Hindustani vs Carnatic traditions
  • UNESCO Intangible Heritage: Yoga, Kumbh Mela (UP), Garba
  • Mughal art: miniature paintings, Fatehpur Sikri architecture
Why added now
  • UPPSC Mains GS-I asks 3–4 questions on Art & Culture every year
  • UP-specific cultural heritage (UP UNESCO sites) now embedded in Prelims
  • Standard books (Lucent, Spectrum) cover Art & Culture insufficiently
Environment & Ecology
Environment (Latest Edition)
Legacy IAS
Prelims + Mains

Environment questions in UPPSC Prelims grew from 8 (2019) to 13 (2025) — a 62% increase. Legacy IAS Environment Notes are now essential for both Prelims and Mains GS-III, which covers environment, ecology, and climate change.

Key chapters for UPPSC
  • Biodiversity: hotspots, Nagoya Protocol, CBD, CITES
  • Climate change: Paris Agreement, India NDC, COP outcomes
  • UP tiger reserves: Dudhwa NP, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (asked every year)
  • Pollution: Ganga Action Plan, Air Quality Index, NGT orders
  • Environmental laws: Environment Protection Act, Forest Rights Act
Supplement with
  • UP wildlife sanctuaries and Ramsar wetland sites (from UP GK source)
  • Monthly current affairs for COP news and new PA notifications
Geography Supplement
Certificate Physical and Human Geography
Goh Cheng Leong (G.C. Leong)
Prelims + Mains

G.C. Leong provides a deeper conceptual explanation of landforms, climate systems, and ocean phenomena than NCERT, making it valuable for candidates who want to understand the “why” behind geography questions — not just memorise facts.

Best chapters for UPPSC
  • Weathering and erosion — river landforms, glacial features
  • Climate types — Koppen classification, monsoon systems
  • Ocean currents — warm vs cold, their climatic effects
  • Natural vegetation — climate-vegetation correlation
Usage note
  • Read NCERT first, then use G.C. Leong for deeper explanation
  • Not needed for every chapter — use selectively for difficult concepts
  • Pair with Oxford School Atlas for map-based questions
Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude — Mains GS-IV
Lexicon for Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude
Chronicle Publications
Mains GS-IV

UPPSC Mains GS Paper IV covers Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude including thinkers, case studies, and public service values. Lexicon provides the terminology, thinker summaries, and conceptual framework needed for this paper.

Key topics for UPPSC GS-IV
  • Ethics definitions: morality, integrity, empathy, probity
  • Philosophers: Kant, Aristotle, Gandhi, Kautilya — concise summaries
  • Civil service values: impartiality, objectivity, dedication
  • Case study approach — administrative dilemma framework
Supplement with
  • 2nd ARC Report Chapter 4 — Ethics in Governance (free PDF)
  • UPPSC GS Paper IV PYQ 2018–2025 case studies (essential)
Indian Economy — Mains GS-III
Indian Economy (15th Edition)
Ramesh Singh · McGraw Hill
Mains GS-III

For UPPSC Mains GS Paper III (Economy, S&T, Security, Environment), a dedicated Economy book adds analytical depth that current affairs alone cannot provide. Ramesh Singh is the standard reference.

Key chapters for UPPSC Mains
  • Economic growth vs development — inclusive growth debate
  • Agriculture: MSP, food security, MGNREGS, PM-KISAN
  • Banking: RBI, monetary policy, NPAs, digital banking
  • Poverty & inequality: MPI, NFHS data, Gini coefficient
Note for Prelims
  • For Prelims only — Economy PYQ practice + current affairs is sufficient
  • Ramesh Singh is primarily for Mains depth — not a Prelims requirement
Atlas — Map-based Questions
Oxford School Atlas (Latest Edition)
Oxford University Press
Prelims + Mains

Map-based questions in UPPSC Prelims (Geography section) and Mains GS-VI (UP Geography) require hands-on atlas practice. Oxford School Atlas is the most comprehensive and widely used reference.

What to mark in the atlas
  • UP river system: Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra, Gomti, Ken, Betwa
  • UP districts, divisional headquarters, and regional boundaries
  • National Parks and Tiger Reserves in UP (Dudhwa, Pilibhit)
  • Major mountain ranges, passes, and plateau regions of India

GS Papers V & VI — The 400-Mark Differentiator: These two UP-specific Mains papers carry 400 marks combined. Since they replaced Optional subjects in 2023, most aspirants are still not giving them adequate preparation. Strong coverage of UP history, governance, economy, and environment in Mains is now the biggest ranking differentiator.

PYQ Books — The #1 Priority Resource

“A candidate who has solved 30 years of UPPSC PYQs knows the exam better than one who has read 10 books but never practiced past papers.”

UPPSC repeats or closely follows the pattern of previous year questions in 30–40% of questions every year. Solving PYQs subject-wise (alongside each chapter) is the single highest-return activity in UPPSC preparation.

Prelims PYQ — Hindi Medium
Purvavlokan (Subject-wise PYQ)
Ghatna Chakra Publication
30 Years PYQHindi

The most widely used UPPSC PYQ resource for Hindi-medium candidates. Available subject-wise — allowing targeted chapter-by-chapter practice alongside standard books.

  • Covers 25–30 years of UPPSC PYQs by subject and topic
  • Questions categorised for pattern recognition
  • Best use: solve PYQs immediately after finishing each chapter
Prelims PYQ — English + Hindi
Errorless 16-Year UPPSC Prelims Solved Papers
Disha Publication
16 Years PYQEnglish

Year-wise solved UPPSC Prelims papers (GS Paper 1 + CSAT) with detailed explanations. Ideal for full-paper timed practice to understand year-by-year difficulty patterns.

  • 16 years of actual UPPSC Prelims (2010–2025) with solutions
  • Both Paper 1 (GS) and Paper 2 (CSAT) in one volume
  • Best for exam-condition timed practice in final 2 months
Free PYQ Alternative: UPPSC Prelims papers from 2015–2025 are available free on the official UPPSC website (uppsc.up.nic.in). Download and print for practice. The key is active solving — not passive reading.

Current Affairs — The 6-Month Strategy

Current affairs carries 22–25 questions in UPPSC Prelims — the highest single-subject weightage. But the correct approach is to prepare only the last 6 months before exam date. Going beyond 6 months wastes time on news that will not be tested.

  • UP-specific (highest priority): UP Budget, ODOP updates, state schemes (Rozgar Mela, PM Surya Ghar in UP), UP appointments, new infrastructure projects
  • National policies: Union Budget, central schemes, Supreme Court judgments, constitutional developments
  • International: India bilateral relations, trade agreements, climate summits, G20/QUAD/SCO updates
  • Science & Technology: ISRO missions, AI developments, biotech in agriculture
  • Environment: COP outcomes, new Protected Area notifications, NGT orders, UP wildlife news
Current Affairs Trap: Do NOT subscribe to multiple monthly magazines and try to read all of them. Pick ONE source — one monthly magazine or one national newspaper — and cover it with a UP current affairs supplement. Depth over breadth, always.

Legacy IAS Recommendation: Hindi-medium candidates have a structural advantage in UPPSC specifically. UP Special GK resources are richer in Hindi, CSAT Hindi section is 18 free marks, and Mains answer writing is more natural. If you are comfortable in Hindi, stay in Hindi medium — do not switch to English for UPPSC.

Frequently Asked Questions

M. Lakshmikant’s Indian Polity is the only Polity book needed — for both Prelims and Mains. Available in English and Hindi. Focus on Panchayati Raj (73rd/74th Amendments), Governor’s powers, constitutional amendments, and Fundamental Rights. Solve UPPSC PYQs after every chapter. No second polity book is required.
English medium: Spectrum (Modern History) + Lucent GK (Ancient/Medieval) + Nitin Singhania (Art & Culture for Mains). Hindi medium: Kiran Publication History covers all three periods in one book. Supplement with 30 years of UPPSC History PYQs for both mediums.
Yes — especially now. Environment questions in UPPSC Prelims grew from 8 (2019) to 13 (2025). Legacy IAS Environment Notes book is recommended for both Prelims and Mains GS-III. Cover UP tiger reserves, biodiversity hotspots, COP outcomes, Ganga ecosystem, and environmental laws. Supplement with current affairs for COP news and NGT orders.
Nitin Singhania’s Indian Art and Culture (6th Edition, McGraw Hill) is the standard reference for UPPSC Mains GS Paper I. It covers temple architecture, classical dances, music, literature, and cultural institutions with 400+ PYQs integrated chapter-wise. For Prelims, Lucent GK provides basic coverage, but Nitin Singhania is needed for Mains depth.
G.C. Leong is a supplement, not a replacement for NCERT. Read NCERT Class 11 Physical Geography first (primary book). Use G.C. Leong selectively for deeper explanation of landforms, climate types, and ocean currents where NCERT feels insufficient. Pair both with the Oxford School Atlas for map-based questions in Prelims and Mains.
Lexicon for Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude (Chronicle Publications) is the standard reference for UPPSC GS Paper IV. Supplement with the 2nd ARC Report Chapter 4 (Ethics in Governance — free PDF) and UPPSC Ethics PYQ case studies from 2018–2025. Writing skill and case study approach matters more than theoretical knowledge in this paper.
Prepare only the last 6 months of current affairs before your exam date. For UPPSC Prelims 2026 (expected October–December 2026), cover approximately April–October 2026. Focus specifically on UP-specific news (UP Budget, ODOP, state schemes, UP appointments) plus national and international events with UP relevance.

Conclusion — 16 Books, 30 Years of PYQs, 6 Months of News

The updated UPPSC PCS 2026–2027 book list now stands at 16 carefully chosen resources — 6 core Prelims books, 4 new subject additions (Art & Culture, Environment, Ethics, Economy), 2 geography supplements, 2 PYQ collections, and 2 CSAT books. This is all you need.

The four books added in this update — Nitin Singhania, Legacy IAS Environment Notes, Lexicon Ethics, and Ramesh Singh Economy — reflect the growing complexity of UPPSC Mains and the rising importance of Environment and Art & Culture in Prelims. Earlier, these subjects could be managed through PYQs and current affairs alone. The exam’s evolution now demands dedicated book coverage.

Disclaimer: This book list is based on Legacy IAS faculty analysis of UPPSC PYQ patterns from 2019–2025. Book editions change — always verify the latest edition before purchasing. For the official UPPSC syllabus, refer to the UPPSC notification on uppsc.up.nic.in.
